Corrosion Testing Protects Profitability and Safety
Corrosion is costly. The costs run the continuum: from merely frustrating and disappointing to catastrophic—from consumer products with shortened life spans, to rusty cars, to public infrastructure such as water treatment systems and bridges in need of repair, to compromised airplanes.
Strictly in monetary terms corrosion costs about $300 billion a year in the U.S. alone, according to NACE International, formerly the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. In other terms, it curtails product utility, harms manufacturer’s reputations and threatens safety.
Mitigation and prevention of corrosion and its associated costs are the primary focus of the corrosion testing services of Miami Valley Materials Testing Center (MVMTC) of Tipp City, Ohio. Metal corrosion testing is one component of our comprehensive materials testing program that our highly qualified engineers, chemists and other professionals provide for a wide array of industries—automotive, aerospace, product manufacturing, fastener, and just about any other materials-driven industry.
Using our state-of-the-art cyclic corrosion salt fog system, we conduct controlled, accelerated corrosion testing employing more than 40 pre-programmed methods to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of coatings, materials and parts. In addition, we offer the capability of programming special test methods to suit our customers’ corrosion testing needs. We also use a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope to detect corrosion that cannot be detected visually or by other means.
Corrosion testing is an integral part of our failure analysis program. MVMTC’s engineering consultants determine the root cause of product, component and material failures—whether it be corrosion, defects in materials or design, poor maintenance, improper fabrication or other factors.
Our engineering consultants serve clients at every phase, including product design and development. We run corrosion testing under simulated environmental conditions specified by our clients to help select materials that will best withstand the forces of nature and product use.
We help clients identify materials, as well as production methods such as corrosion inhibitors, coatings, sealants and cathodic and anodic protection, to extend product life, enhance safety and performance, and increase value to the consumer—while protecting our clients’ reputation and success in the marketplace.
As a single-source provider of materials testing and analysis, MVMTC enables clients to complement and supplement corrosion testing studies with metallurgical, failure analysis, chemical analysis, and mechanical property testing. We also offer our clients hardness testing, tensile testing, microhardness and macrohardness testing, as well as a comprehensive range of non-destructive testing techniques.
The professionals of MVMTC bring years of practical industrial experience to our testing laboratories. As a result of their experience, they’re acutely aware of our clients’ need for timely, detailed reporting of corrosion and other testing procedures to maintain demanding production deadlines, while assuring product quality. |
