mechanical testing

Mechanical testing helps companies design and manufacture reliable products. Our full-service mechanical testing laboratory routinely performs various mechanical testing methods including macro hardness, impact testing, tensile testing and more. These tests provide our clients with pertinent information about the mechanical properties and the overall suitability of their materials for its intended application.

Miami Valley Materials Testing Center is capable of performing the following mechanical tests:

Charpy impact testing

IMPACT TESTING

Impact testing determines a material’s impact strength in the presence of a flaw or defect. Impact testing can reveal the ductile behavior or brittle behavior of a specimen depending on the temperature at which it is impacted. Our full-service machine shop can prepare your impact test specimens to meet NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) qualifications.

MVMTC offers the following types of impact testing methods:

  • Charpy Impact Test

  • Izod Impact Test

  • Sub Sized Specimens

TEST METHODS: ASTM E23

Brinell macrohardness testing

MACROHARDNESS TESTING

Hardness testing measures the material’s overall strength by determining its resistance to penetration. It is extremely useful in material selection because it provides insight in to how well the material will wear over time. Specifically, macrohardness testing is performed on larger test samples such as castings and forgings.

Our testing laboratory offers the following macrohardness testing methods:

  • Rockwell/Superficial Hardness Tests

  • Brinell Hardness Test

TEST METHODS:
ASTM E18 | ASTM E10

Tensile testing of a round tensile specimen

TENSILE TESTING

Tensile testing provides information about the yield strength, tensile strength, and the elongation of a material specimen. With our state-of-the-art Instron Universal Testing System and its 56,000-pound load capacity, we are able to test a wide variety of materials with strength levels ranging from 50 psi to 280,000 psi. Using our extensometers we are also capable of measuring strain rates and providing r and n values.

Our full-service machine shop has the ability to shear, cut and machine all tensile samples in-house to meet required specifications.

Sample Size Requirements:
Standard: 1in x 7in
Sub-sized: 1in x 4in

TEST METHODS:
ASTM A48 | ASTM A370 | ASTM E8 | ASTM E517 - r value | ASTM E646 - n value | ASTM B557 | ASTM F606/F606M
